August Spinel Birthstone

August Spinel Birthstone

A Spinel birthstone was the additional birthstone added for August. Similarly to December and June; August is the third month that has three gemstones.

August Spinel Birthstone

First and foremost, Sardonyx was the original birthstone for August. Be sure to visit our August Sardonyx Birthstone post to read more about this gemstone. However, later Peridot was added and is now known as the primary birthstone for the month of August.

Since 2016, August now has another birthstone. For any Ruby or Sapphire lover, you will love the Spinel gemstone. What makes this gemstone different than the Ruby and Sapphire, is the Spinel ranks lower in hardness on the Mohs scale. Usually this gemstone’s most desired color is red; however blue, orange and pink are also popular. Additionally, this gemstone is available in pale shades such as lavender, light pink and mauve.

Similarly to other colored gemstones, the darker the hue and the intensity; the more expensive the gemstone is.  Also, this gemstone is usually in cushion, oval and pear shapes. However, sometimes you can find this in a octagon, square round or trillion shape.
